Buddy Taping for Broken Toes

A broken toe can occur when it is jammed into a piece of furniture, or if a heavy object is dropped on it. It can cause severe pain and discomfort, and it may become difficult to walk. There are noticeable symptoms that often occur with a broken toe, including swelling, bruising, and the toe may appear red. In severe toe fractures, the fractured bone may protrude from the toe. This requires immediate medical attention in order to accelerate the healing process, and possibly prevent an infection from occurring. Buddy taping is an effective strategy that is used to stabilize the broken toe. This is done by taping the toe to the toe next to it, and it may provide ease in accomplishing daily activities. Swelling may be reduced when the leg is elevated, and over the counter medications are taken for pain. If you have endured a broken toe, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can guide you toward correct treatment.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Charles Passet, DPM from Forest Hills. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.
